Gentler than your average chemical exfoliator, hydrating and nourishing, and suitable for even the most sensitive skin types - gluconolactone is the hardest working ingredient you’ve probably never heard of. Until now, that is! This week’s ingredient spotlight is shining on this unsung hero ingredient that is found in both the Reset Rinse and Triple Threat Tonic. Read on to find out more!
You may be familiar with the more popular chemical acid choices such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) because they are everywhere. AHAs are commonly found in toners, serums, moisturizers, and haircare. In fact, Reset Rinse has two kinds of AHAs, glycolic and lactic, in the formula! BHAs, like salicylic acid, are also found in various skincare products but typically at lower levels due to being oil-soluble (instead of water soluble), making them powerful and able to exfoliate deeper into the skin but also makes them more irritating.
Gluconolactone is neither an AHA nor a BHA, and belongs in a third category of chemical exfoliators called poly-hydroxy acids, also known as PHAs. Regarded as the gentlest form of chemical exfoliators, it works similarly to AHAs by exfoliating the skin (or scalp) and removing dead skin cells and buildup, but has a unique makeup that also makes it a humectant. Humectants are ingredients that bind moisture to the skin (or scalp, or hair), helping with hydration and making them the perfect exfoliator for even sensitive skin!
Because it is very gentle by nature yet still effective, gluconolactone is great for everyone and is extremely unlikely to cause irritation. It also pairs well with most ingredients, making it easily incorporated into formulas that are already using other chemical exfoliators to help boost the efficacy and impart hydration.
Because it sloughs away dead skin cells and helps remove buildup while adding hydration, it’s great for people who either have a naturally dry scalp or who tend to experience seasonal dry scalp in the colder months of the year.
Similarly, it works wonders on the strands by imparting hydration and “sealing” the moisture into each strand. If you have naturally dry hair or have damaged hair from heat styling or coloring, this lightweight hydrator is exactly what your hair needs.
Gluconolactone is found in both the Reset Rinse and Triple Threat Tonic, providing solutions for both the scalp and the strands!
